Are you thinking of exporting meat to China, but do not have the required information? Monkey Markets is the answer to your doubts.

News regarding the chinese meat market situation.

First of all, let's take a brief review at the previous year.

Last year, according to data from China's General Administration of Customs data, the Asian country imported a total of 9,38 million tonnes of meat, or US$ 32 million, representing an increase of 4.6% compared to the previous year. In December, China announced that an imported meat consignee will not be required to import meat products from 1 January 2022.
This would come into effect on January 1st, 2022.

For instance, large restaurants with multiple outlets, which previously could not import products directly from abroad, now can apply to import meat products.

Let´s not forget that the emergence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in China in 2018 brought a radical change in trade. China slaughtered 30% of its livestock in two years, which resulted in a shortfall of 18 million tonnes of meat in 2020. So the 2021 numbers were very encouraging for the market.

What types of meat are exported to China?

In 2021, more than half of the imported meat was pork, while beef represented about the 25% and poultry around 20%

At the beginning of this new year, the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) published a forecast report that shows that the meat demand will grow faster than the supply itself. According to this, the world meat production would reach 58 million tonnes, that is to say, a growth of 1% per year.

The need to import products will be three times higher that the quantities imported the previous year, (2.7% increase), estimating the quantities at 10 million tonnes.

All in all, China is expected to remain the world's largest meat buyer.

It is interesting to mention the vision that Rabobank gives for the year 2022: "China’s demand will be greater for Premium cuts, so it sees a promising scenario in the placement of high-quality meat for this destination”. The country's high demand for meat products will create a great opportunity for exporting countries.

Evolution of meat exports to China

Meat Supply evolution (1)

The previous figure shows the evolution of meat exports to China from 2018 to 2022. Total meat supply would reach 79 million tonnes, from 75 million tonnes in 2018. This reflects a growth in the Chinese demand. If we split the total, 45 million tonnes belong to pork, 15 million tonnes for poultry and 10 million tonnes for beef.

Demand for beef is strengthening. In 2020, beef supply was 12.3 million tonnes less than in 2021.
